Start with the Basics
If youâve been injured in a riding accident, it may take time to overcome your fears. Because the memory of an injury can be so deeply felt, the fears of being injured again can often be overcome only incrementally, bit by bit, over time. You also have to understand that while you can overcome your fears, you may never be able to completely extinguish them. Remnants may always be lurking in the background, and you may always be aware of their presence. A bad riding experience can leave emotional scars that may always be a part of you. A bad experience may teach lessons, but those lessons come at a cost.
The good news is that bad experiences fade with time and retraining. By taking baby steps and slowly broaching a fearful task, the rider improves fundamental skills by dividing her performance goals into small, manageable actions that can be perfected through repetition. A skill that can be repeated automatically creates a new memory that overwrites older memories that may no longer be relevant. The result over time? Solid skills, better performance, and growing confidence.
